Marching Powder, Thomas McFadden and Rusty Young
Planning for my trip to Bolivia I came across this read about a crazy prison in La Paz, San Pedro. It’s self-managed by the prisoners, has realtors, a tax office and the wives and kids live inside with the prisoners because they can’t afford to live on their own. Oh yeah, it also has a lot of cocaine.

How To Be Single, Liz Tuccillo
Ok so turns out this has been in my Kindle for a while now but I never read it. Not sure what failed date I downloaded this after but anyway, finally read it and well…it’s the best description of what it’s like that I’ve come across. (10 years post Eat, Pray, Love I can’t believe this is still my genre). If you need hope surviving singledome, or are just curious about what it’s really like , it’s a fantastic account.
Shantaram, Gregory David Roberts
Exciting read about an Australian fugitive trying to escape the law in Bombay. Descriptive look into the complexities of the city and life in India as an outsider tries to adapt.
Turn Right at Machu Picchu, Mark Adams
A New York based travel editor retraces the steps of Hiram Bingham III as he explores Peru in the early 1900s searching for the lost city of Vilcabamba. A blend of modern references, humor and history it gives fantastic insight into the history and legend that is Machu Picchu.
A Short History of Nearly Everything, Bill Bryson
Famed author Bill Bryson attempts to break down to everyman’s level just exactly how the universe started, how we got here and everything in between. Witty, brilliant and engaging take on real science.
The Gift of Shamanism, Itzhak Beery
Cool read found on the El Refugio bookcase. Overview of the ancient arts and experiences passed on from teachers to students, with modern connections. Lots of local references to the Otavalo area.
